[via martha] Bring 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water to a boil in a small pot. Reduce heat, and simmer, stirring until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, stir in 1 grated English cucumber, and let cool. Pour through a fine sieve into a bowl or large glass measuring cup, and discard solids (you should have 2 cups syrup).
What’s Blooming: Sweetbay (Magnolia virginiana).
I wish I could convey how wonderful this flower smells. My sweetbay is a large shrub growing in the understory, loaded this year with hundreds of buds. Only three have blossomed so far, but even so, those few flowers completely infuse the air with the blended scents of lemon and vanilla. It smells the way a lemon cupcake with buttercream icing tastes. Delectable.
